Quirky castle hotel originating from 11th century. Staff v friendly, helpful and welcoming. Interesting walk around the dungeon. Lovely grounds and woodlands. Rooms clean and spacious. Food disappointing though and you would need to drive to any other eateries. I had some overcooked lamb chops despite asking for them to be pink and accompaniments disappointing. Risotto was better and huge portion but large chunks of chicken fillets on top made it look unappetizing and amateurish. Maybe just unlucky choices ?
We regrettably only stayed for one night, following a hospital appointment.What a stunning building and an equally stunning welcome - we were made to feel really welcome and enjoyed the four-poster experience. The shower room was beautifully equipped but we both failed to adjust the shower enough to get a consistent warm flow of water. We enjoyed our meals and the friendly service. And hope to return for longer.
Really impressed with this hotel, lots of character and the rooms are really comfortable. The castle itself is really spectacular and the interior is sympathetic to the history of the castle. The receptionist who booked us in was really friendly and a member of our party got a room upgrade to a suite which was like being at home. The hotel is 5 miles from Darlington and there is free parking to the front of the castle. This hotel is spectacular and a really impressive history, worth a stay if you're ever in Darlington. Room prices are not too expensive either
Beautiful building with reasonably priced restaurant and tasty food. Comfortable bed - one step down from luxury, but good standard non the less. Lovely staff.
